At Silverstream School we run swimming for Year 1-2 students with the Silverstream Swim Academy Tutors in our heated school pool. The lessons are once a week throughout the whole school year.
The pool is heated to 32 degrees and the changing rooms will also be heated on cold days. We recommend using silicone caps if you are worried about your child’s hair getting wet and making them cold. The pool is 80cm at the shallow end and 90cm at the deep end.
Each class is split in to 3 groups.
Group One is a beginner group that works on confidence in the water, bubbles, submersion and floating. Children are not forced to go under the water, and our group 1 is very play based with lots of activities designed to get your children relaxed and having fun in the water.
Group Two work on kicking on front and back, basic arm strokes and rolling from front to back for survival purposes.
Group Three work on extending the length children can swim. They do arm strokes on front and back as well as work on rolling to breathe or side breathing.
Each session two of the above groups are taught by trained swim teachers from Silverstream Swim Academy, and one group will be taught by your child's teacher. Each teacher will teach each group for approximately 2 - 3 weeks. There is a small annual donation from parents which makes these lessons possible for each child, you will be given information at your child's enrolment orientation days (Kākano sessions).
The Swim Programme teaches basic swimming and survival skills. It is not designed to replace after school/weekend swimming classes, but rather to give the children additional time to practice their swimming skills.
At the end of each term we do a water safety circuit which ensures your children learn how to call for help, receive help and recognise someone who needs help.
If you have any questions around the swimming programme please contact your child's teacher or the Silverstream Swim Academy based here at school.
