Gifted & Talented Programmes

In August, 2011, a writers’ workshop was held. This was run by Janice Marriott.
Here are some of the poems written at the workshop.

Cute Cat
With love and admiration

She walks full of pride,
Round the room.
Her soft, golden fur twinkles in the sunlight.
Her sweet, small face meows with happiness.
If only she could come sit with me
And rest her soft, ginger head on my knee.

Tired cat

Lying in front of the fire,
Front legs stretched out in front of him,
Looking like he is praying to the fire.
Back legs stretched out behind him,
Slightly apart, as if he had just crawled into bed.

I wish he could stay in that position,
For at least two hours per day.

But he doesn’t and he won’t
Because when it’s tea time,
He’ll always be in the kitchen.

My Cat Brutus
He nuzzles my hand
Eager to be released
Into the jungle of my sheets

With a smile I give over,
Hearing that loud, rumbling purr.
I wish I could shrink to cat size
And explore with him
His ginger fur, rubbing mine.

But that will never happen
My skin stays smooth
My legs are warm with his back leaning on me.
I peacefully rub his belly to find his purr rev up
And I settle down to sleep with Brutus.

Bullet:  Best Dog

His slim structure

With splotched fur.
As soft as a cushion
And clean as a new shirt.

I wish I could bring
Life back to the body,
That is now gone,
And see it bound over fields.

But I can’t
As he will never return to play,
In the meadows as he did,
Or show tricks that he has learnt.
No, he’ll just watch us
From the stars.
Wishing he was there.

Lethal Lion

Golden fur falling over a sunset,
Ripped ears from battles of young.
White fangs dyed red
With the blood of prey.

I wish he was home,
Pouncing on his next meal.
But he can’t
And won’t,
Be going home to the savannah.
